COVID-19, Day 78

We had a very good talk this morning with our kids about racism and what’s been going on lately. We talk about race stuff with them a lot, but I could tell that our oldest was weirded out by how we were both acting this morning, so we had a special conversation about it over breakfast.

It’s hard to articulate what’s happening right now to young kids without scaring them or causing them anxiety, but I feel like we did a good job with it. It’s also hard to explain to them that they were born with a certain amount of privilege that they shouldn’t have–that no one should have–and that they should never abuse it and always use it to help people who don’t share in that same privilege.

This is the opposite of how I grew up. We never talked about race or gender. All I ever heard were the various epithets my parents would throw around when the people of color they knew had their backs turned. I’m not sure how I grew up in that environment without becoming a bigot.
